Space Coupling Diffusers are built using high-performance materials selected for acoustic performance, durability, and versatility.

Frame and Construction Materials
  • Material: Baltic Birch plywood, precision CNC-cut
  • Construction: Periodic grid of square wells for spatial sound redistribution
  • Finish: Sanded to 220 grit, unfinished
  • Design: Open-frame construction (no backing) for multi-directional scattering

Our construction approach prioritizes long-term performance and structural integrity while using premium materials.

Wood Finish and Customization

Space Coupling Diffusers come unfinished, sanded to 220 grit and ready to install as-is. The raw Baltic Birch finish is beautiful and requires no additional treatment.

Optional finishing: Customers may stain or paint their diffusers without affecting acoustic performance. Leaving the wood unfinished showcases the beauty of Baltic Birch and allows us to keep prices down while using premium materials like Baltic Birch instead of MDF or lower-grade plywood.

Indoor Use and Safety

All materials used in Space Coupling Diffusers are appropriate for indoor environments, including studios, homes, offices, schools, and houses of worship.

Space Coupling Diffusers are designed for straightforward installation and include hardware for both wall and ceiling mounting.

Diffusers can be installed on walls or ceilings using the included hardware kit. They work particularly well when suspended below bass trap clouds to combine low-end control with mid/high-frequency diffusion.

Common placements:

  • Ceilings (most common and effective placement)
  • Suspended below bass trap clouds in control rooms and listening rooms
  • Sidewalls, front walls, and back walls in tracking rooms
  • Above the listening position in mix rooms and listening rooms

Space Coupling Diffusers work best when sound hits them at various angles rather than direct sound aimed straight at them. This is why ceiling placement and suspended installations are particularly effective.

Installation guides are available as downloadable PDFs and include step-by-step instructions for both wall and ceiling mounting.

Space Coupling Diffusers: Small Rooms, Big Sound

Space Coupling Diffusers work differently than traditional diffusers. Instead of relying on mathematical sequences, they redistribute sound energy across space using a regular grid of square wells that creates constructive and destructive interference. The result is natural scattering that breaks up reflections so walls vanish and depth appears.

Small tracking rooms suddenly have depth and air. Harsh highs soften. Stereo width opens up. The room stops feeling cramped and starts feeling alive. Whether you're recording drums, acoustic guitar, strings, or vocals in a tight space, Space Coupling Diffusers add dimension where you didn't think it was possible.

Your Questions: Answered

  • Space Coupling Diffusers are designed specifically for close-proximity use. Traditional diffusers like Stepped QRDs need at least 6 feet of distance to work effectively. Space Coupling Diffusers work beautifully in smaller rooms where you're closer than 6 feet to the treatment. They also use a different design: instead of a quadratic residue sequence, they use a periodic grid of square wells that redistributes sound energy across space. The scattering is less frequency-specific and more about spatial redistribution, creating natural depth and openness in tight spaces.

  • They can, but they work best when sound hits them at various angles rather than direct sound aimed straight at them. This is why they're ideal for ceilings and particularly effective when suspended below bass trap clouds. For flush wall mounting where direct sound will hit them head-on, Stepped QRDs are usually a better choice. Space Coupling Diffusers shine when they're radiating sound throughout the room from multiple angles.

  • Ceilings are the most common and effective placement, especially suspended below bass trap clouds in control rooms and listening rooms. In tracking rooms, they can also be used on sidewalls, front walls, and back walls to add depth and dimension throughout the space. In mix rooms and listening rooms, the priority is above the listening position, though they can be placed throughout larger rooms for added depth and width.

  • Space Coupling Diffusers work best in smaller rooms and are ideal for tracking environments where you want the room to feel larger and more open. They're particularly effective on ceilings and suspended below clouds. Scatter Faces are designed to mount over existing absorption panels and work best in rooms that already have heavy treatment where you want to add air and dimension back into the space. If you're recording instruments and need the room to feel bigger, Space Coupling Diffusers are the choice. If you're mixing in a heavily treated room and want to maintain spatial cues, Scatter Faces are the answer.

  •  No. Space Coupling Diffusers come sanded and ready to install as-is. The raw Baltic Birch finish looks great in most spaces, but you can stain or paint them if you prefer. Just avoid heavy coatings that could fill the wells, as this may affect acoustic performance.
