Our Binary Amplitude Diffusers combine the best of both worlds: absorption and diffusion. By blending the control of an absorber with the openness of a diffuser, Binary Amplitude Diffuser panels let you manage reflections and decay time without making your room sound lifeless.

Mount them over any of our Hi-Mid, Broadband, Bass Trap, or SubFreq™ panels to create a hybrid acoustic system that controls low frequencies while scattering mids and highs for a more natural, musical feel.

* Acoustic panels not included

Binary Amplitude Diffusers are built to order in our Nashville shop. Production typically takes 3 – 4weeks. Once finished, orders usually arrive within 3–5 business days.

Smaller orders ship via UPS Ground, while larger orders ship via LTL freight to keep costs reasonable. Shipping is available within the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.

Local pickup is available in Nashville.

Eligible items may be returned within 30 days of delivery if unused and in original packaging. A 10% restocking fee applies, and return shipping is the customer's responsibility. Custom and special-order products are not eligible for return.

Diffusers that have been painted or stained cannot be returned, as they are no longer in new, unused condition.

All Binary Amplitude Diffusers include a 3-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal indoor use.

Binary Amplitude Diffusers are CNC-cut from a single ¼” panel face, precision cut in your choice of pattern. Lockeland is our true binary amplitude diffuser, a field of circular perforations. Rosebank and Edgefield are design-forward variations on the same reflective and absorptive idea, built around a more distinctive look rather than a mathematical sequence. All three work the same way: a portion of the panel’s face is left solid to reflect and scatter energy, and the rest is open to let the panel underneath keep absorbing.

Baltic birch: raw ¼” Baltic birch plywood, sanded to 220 grit. No stain, no clear coat, no polyurethane applied.

Walnut: ¼” walnut-veneered MDF, also raw and unfinished, also sanded to 220 grit. The walnut is a color and grain choice only, not a lacquer or stained finish. It’s the same finish standard we use across every exposed-wood product we build, including the birch version of this diffuser, our Gobos, and the rest of our diffuser line.

Optional finishing: you’re welcome to stain or paint either material yourself. It won’t affect acoustic performance, as long as you avoid heavy coatings thick enough to fill the holes, slots, or triangles.

Both materials are appropriate for indoor use in studios, homes, offices, schools, and houses of worship.

Binary Amplitude Diffusers mount directly over an existing MCA acoustic panel: Broadband, Bass Trap, High-Mid, or SubFreq. Included screws (4 for 2x2 through 4x4, 6 for 6x2, 6x4, 8x2, and 8x4), no air gap between the diffuser and the panel behind it.

If you order a diffuser and its matching panel together, the mounting choice, visible or hidden, is decided when you order and we build it that way before it ships, so there’s nothing to assemble on your end. If you’re adding a Binary Amplitude Diffuser to a panel you already own, that choice is yours to make at install, and every hole is pre-drilled at our shop either way, so no measuring is required.

The assembly guide includes full step-by-step instructions, including the two tools you’ll need.

Space, Balance, Control.

Our Binary Amplitude Diffusers are built for rooms that need low-frequency control but can’t afford to lose the energy that makes them feel alive: mixing and tracking spaces where imaging and depth matter, two-channel listening rooms built around a system worth hearing clearly, and sanctuaries where speech has to cut through while the room still supports a full congregation singing.

Mount our Binary Amplitude Diffuser on top of an MCA acoustic panel, and it scatters roughly half of the mid and high frequency energy the panel would otherwise absorb, sending it back into the room instead of soaking it up, while the panel underneath keeps absorbing low frequencies exactly like it always has. This is the same range where flutter echo builds and where over-treated rooms go flat, quiet in a way that drains energy out instead of controlling it.

What makes our Binary Amplitude Diffusers essential is what they give back. They don’t just add a decorative face to a panel. They return the high-frequency energy pure absorption would take, break up flutter echo, and protect a room’s imaging and depth while the low end stays controlled. When a room can control the lows without losing its air, the mix translates, the system reveals what it’s capable of, and every seat in the house hears the same room.

Built for the rooms that need both

Every space on this list needs low-frequency control. None of them can afford to lose their high- and mid-frequency life to get it.

Seen, or not seen at all

The first choice you make with a Binary Amplitude Diffuser has nothing to do with pattern. It’s whether anyone ever sees it, and it’s a decision you make when you order, not something you figure out later with a screwdriver in hand.

Order it mounted on top of a finished panel and the Binary Amplitude Diffuser becomes part of the room, adding texture and depth against the fabric. Order it hidden, and we build it into the panel before the fabric goes on, so the wall keeps the clean look of a standard fabric-wrapped acoustic panel with nothing visibly different about it.|

The acoustic performance is identical either way. For a lot of churches, the hidden option is the whole appeal: the room gets the control and the scattering it needs without introducing a new visual element on the wall.

If you’re buying a Binary Amplitude Diffuser on its own to add to a panel you already own, that choice is yours to make at install instead, as covered in the assembly guide.

Bring Life Into
Every Room.

When you treat a room for low-frequency control, it’s easy to go too far. Covering every surface in absorption can make a space sound overly tight or “dead.” That can leave mixes feeling flat, listening rooms less immersive, and home theaters missing that sense of depth and energy.

Binary Amplitude Diffusers restore balance. Their pattern of precisely sized holes scatters high and mid frequencies, keeping the room lively and three-dimensional while your low-end remains tight and controlled. The result is a space that feels balanced, accurate, and engaging — with just the right amount of life left in the sound.

Your Questions: Answered

  • Binary Amplitude Diffusers mount directly over an MCA acoustic panel with included screws, 4 for 2x2 through 4x4, 6 for larger sizes. Every hole is pre-drilled at our shop, so no measuring is required. Whether it mounts visible or hidden under the fabric is decided when you order. Full step-by-step instructions are in the assembly guide.

  • Both give you the same acoustic performance, so it comes down to the look you want and whether you’re ordering it bundled with a panel or adding it to one you already have.

Mounting over the finished panel puts the wood pattern on display and adds visual texture to the wall. Mounting under the fabric hides the diffuser completely, keeping the clean look of a standard fabric-wrapped panel.

Churches and worship spaces often prefer the hidden install; studios and listening rooms often like showing the wood.

  • No. Binary Amplitude Diffusers are designed to mount over an existing MCA acoustic panel, like a Bass Trap or Broadband Panel. They scatter roughly half of the mid and high frequency energy the panel would otherwise absorb, while the panel underneath handles low-frequency control. Without a panel behind them, they won’t deliver the balanced performance they’re built for.

  • Control rooms: avoid your first reflection points and anywhere directly above the listening position; both spots benefit more from absorption. The front wall is a great spot, since it won’t affect what the speakers see. The back wall, the back half of the room along the side walls, and the corners all work well, corners especially, where you keep the low-end control while scattering more of the mid- and high-frequency energy back into the room. The ceiling works too, just not directly above where you’re sitting.

Listening rooms: Everywhere but start with the side walls.  This is where Binary Amplitude Diffusers shine. Reflections off the side walls give a stereo system its sense of width and depth, so scattering that energy there instead of absorbing it makes the band sound like it’s right in front of you. The back wall, ceiling, and front wall all work great too!

If you’re only treating a room with a handful of panels, 2 to 4, maybe 6, you likely don’t need Binary Amplitude Diffusers yet. They matter most once most of your walls and ceiling are treated with Bass Traps; that’s when you’ll need to start scattering and diffusing the high and mid frequencies so the room doesn’t lose its air. At that point, the side walls, back wall, and ceiling are all excellent spots to pair with your bass traps.

Churches and worship spaces: the side walls or the back wall, most commonly the back wall. You still get full low-end control from the panel underneath, while the Binary Amplitude Diffuser scatters some mid- and high-frequency energy back into the room instead of absorbing it all, so the room keeps some life instead of going flat.

  • No. Both finishes, Baltic birch and walnut, come
raw and unfinished, sanded to 220 grit and ready to install as-is. Neither one
has a stain or clear coat applied, that’s true across all of our exposed-wood
products. You’re welcome to stain or paint either one yourself if you’d like.

  • Yes. If you order a panel and a Binary Amplitude Diffuser together and want them paired up before they ship, we’re glad to do it. Just tell us which panels in your order the diffusers should go on, either by emailing howdy@musiccityacoustics.com or through the designer or consultant you’re working with, and we’ll have them assembled before they leave our shop. Most orders go through one of our designers or consultants directly, who can take care of this for you. If you’re ordering online on your own, this is for you: just let us know which panels to pair, and we’ll handle the rest.
